Hollywoodbets Newton Park
Khayalethu Youth Centre
Support for the Eastern Cape Youth
Hollywoodbets Newton Park chose the Khayalethu Youth Centre as their organisation of choice for Hollywoodbets' Social Responsibility Programme.
It was an incredibly heart warming experience for our team when they went to handover the purchased items for the center. They were blown away by how happy the kids were, as they were all jumping up and down for joy!
Hollywood donated a projector and sound system, as it was an item that was much needed by the centre. They will use this equipment to aid in teaching the children there.
Dr Marietjie van der Merwe, the Head of the youth centre, was there and informed us a lot about how the centre works.
The center takes in children in from the ages of 6 to 18 years. A lot of the children here have never been to school, and have received no formal education. A lot of them have no birth certificate as they were born in the streets. The center provides these children an education, and works on building an identity for them.
Some of the children have moved onto bigger and brighter things because of the help the received at the centre. One of the boys Mbuleleo left in January to work in a head office. Another boy, Luvuyo, has become a child care worker. Three of the former children Stembel, Clifton, and Esra have all got jobs in security now. They even managed to help some of the 18 year old children earn their drivers licences. These are just a few of the success stories. They are giving hope for the street children. Some of the children could not even have imagined achieving these things before coming to the home.
One of the young boys gave a wonderful, heart-rending speech. He could hardly speak properly, but we got the message he was trying to give. We could see that it came from the heart.
We take our hats off to all the people working there. They are making a big difference in the life of the youths in Port Elizabeth. We really hope we can sponsor them again next year, as there is just so much more we feel they need and could make good use of.
